There is nothing less than the present moment [...]. When we think of this present as having existed, yet it doesn't exist; and when we think of it as existing, it already passed. [...] In practice, we perceive only the past, the pure present being the inapproachable left over of the past grasping the future.
Henri Bergson

In May / June 2019, I was invited to attend an art residency, during which I was researching the 'Inverted Cone’ diagram created by Henri Bergson to illustrate his theory on Time and Memory. Apart from my strong curiosity about the subject, I was particularly interested in the cone shape and its sonic possibilities. So, I developed a series of works using this object in the form of sculptures, drawings and diagrams, as well as performative actions.

WE NEED TO TALK TO THE GHOSTS

Memory is Duration – to explain his theory of memory Bergson created a special diagram in the form of an Inverted Cone, where he show us that the past not only coexists with the present, but it preserves itself like a virtuality. So, if the past is here, between us, I prefer to call it of ghost = between all of us there is this phantasmagoric presence that can not be ignored because it is alive in a constant process of transformation.

.

BODIES ARE CHANNEL OF PASSAGE

Incorporation [embodiment] – in religions of African or indigenous matrices this concept is very present: a shaman incorporates the spirits of her ancestors. They communicate with these virtual forces or ghostly energies through their bodies. Therefore, the body can be an existential territory that is defined not only as human. I am looking for different ways of incorporating these strange and incomprehensible forces that extend between the past and the present. We, humans do not have the ability to retain the ghost within us, because we can not incorporate this energy with control. So, in this trajectory, the most important is to learn to receive and thus become a channel. Perhaps, a conductor.
